How to Write a Great Business Description

Every business knows WHAT they do,

Most business know HOW they do it,

But very few can explain WHY they do what they do.

The Why is the most important part of your business, but why? Because people don't just buy what you do, they buy into why you do it. The goal is not just to do business with everybody who needs your services, the goal is to do business with people whose values align with yours, client's who appreciate what you stand for and how you, uniquely, will serve them. 

This might sound a bit airy fairy but this principle is not just an opinion, its about biology. This is where our gut decisions come from. Someone may give you all the facts and figures and you think "Yeah, I know all that but .. it just doesn't feel right" and you go with someone else, your potential clients do this too.  But why do we use that verb? It doesn't "feel" right? Because the part of the brain that controls decision making doesn't control language. Our neocortex controls the what, our analytical rational thought and language,  the Limbic brains are responsible for all of our feelings, like trust and loyalty its also responsible for all human behaviour, all decision-making,  and it has no capacity for language.  So when communicating from the What How Why, Yes people can understand, vast amounts of complicated information like features and benefits and facts and figures, it just doesn't drive behaviour. When we communicate from the Why How What, were talking directly to the part of the brain that controls behaviour and then we allow people to rationalise it with tangible things we say and do.  This is where gut decisions come from. Yes, we consider the facts but we, like our clients, make decisions based on how a company or business makes us feel. Whether we're aware of it or not.
 
For Example:

"At The Greatest Builders  we build great homes, they're beautifully designed and crafted, so...want to buy one?" This is how most of us communicate, that's how most marketing and sales pitches are done. We say what we do, we say how we're different or better and we expect some sort of behaviour or purchase from the customer. What, How and then ? Buy.

What we want to do is reverse this process. Why us, How we can serve you, and then What we do.
"In everything we do, we believe in challenging the status quo. We believe in thinking differently. We make beautifully designed homes, that are functional, customised and as unique as you. We just happen to build great homes, want us to build you one?"
